Your one-stop-shop for all my journalism work
My family’s chosen currency is storytelling. Whether it’s a packed house for Christmas dinner or a lazy Sunday morning, stories are always being shared with wide eyes and lighthearted voices. I fell in love with the art when I was young, and I became captivated by the power words hold over people.
I began writing stories of my own and editing clips of family vacations together before I knew what journalism even was. When my dad told me about the profession of unveiling stories to the world, I knew it was what I was supposed to do.
I was hugely influenced by stories like Marisa Kwiatkowski’s expose on Larry Nassar, Julie K. Brown’s investigative work on Jeffery Epstein and the Washington Post documentary on the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in Minneapolis. I see breakthrough stories like the New York Times Harvey Weinstein expose as the truest triumphs of journalism and I strive to uphold such values and ethics. It feels like an honor to write breaking news stories about the WWE sexual abuse cases of Janel Grant and the Ring Boys for the Washington Examiner and interview protesters on Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day for the Daily Caller News Foundation.
I filmed a protest for the first time at the Maricopa County Elections Office in Phoenix, Arizona on November 4, 2020– my first semester of college. After seeing pro-Trump protesters in Downtown Phoenix on MSNBC, I knew I needed to be there interviewing them myself. With nothing more than an iPhone and some courage, I did my first Man on the Street video with zero experience or journalism training. As messy as the video is, it was my first exposure to a protesting atmosphere, and I was hooked.
My first exposure to writing about assault cases was in my sophomore year of college after I heard about a Justice for Janes march being held on Liberty University’s campus. Intrigued, I began to research the cause behind the outrage only to become up in arms myself. Despite only having digital media-based classes under my belt, I didn’t hesitate to write an article on the allegations Liberty was facing. I posted it to my Twitter page not thinking anyone would see it, so when the news editor of the Champion found it and recruited me to the paper the next night, I simply could not believe it.
I have stepped out of my comfort zone and played into my personality; since covering Capitol Hill for the DCNF, I have established connections with staffers and lawmakers, and I have a question and quip for every legislator I come across. If you want to hear me holler at a lawmaker, check out my Twitter page or tune in to a press conference to catch me with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries or Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. Maybe even Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, if I’m lucky!
